Spirit Lake Gifts - Star Quilts

Art to warm you and your home

All of the star quilts you see on this page are a traditional pattern and made by enrolled members of the Spirit Lake Nation. Star quilts are an integral part of Sioux culture, given away at traditional ceremonies such as pow-wows, funerals and the one-year anniversary of the death of a family member.

We keep two standard sizes in stock - queen-size and baby quilts. All queen-size sell for $275 and baby quilts are $150. Shipping is included.

For color, specify "country" (at left), pastel (middle and bottom left) or bright (bottom right). For specific color schemes (up to three), there will be a $50 additional charge. Allow an extra week for delivery.

If you want to complete your ensemble, pillows are available for $45 each or $75 for a set of two.

Every Dakota home has several star quilts, which are used for both function and decoration. It's no secret that poverty is a major problem on the reservation. In many homes, like the one at left, older furniture is hidden and beautified by a star quilt cover. Star quilts, like the one below at left, are also hung as wall decorations.

As can be seen by the examples on this page, all of the traditional star quilts have a similar pattern with variations in color and complexity.
